Introducing Sketch Squares: A New Tool for Artists and Makers

Are you an artist who sometimes finds a big blank page intimidating? If so, you’re not alone. Many artists struggle with the vast emptiness of an unmarked sheet of paper, which is why I created Sketch Squares – a tool to help you get started with your ideas effortlessly: exploring line, shape and colour.

What are Sketch Squares?

Sketch Squares is a template of 15 squares, designed with a slightly deeper bottom edge to hold it securely in place. It fits perfectly in an A4 sketchbook but you can also build the squares up for larger sheets of paper. The tool is oak veneered and measures 29.5 cm by 19 cm, combining functionality with a touch of elegance.

Why Sketch Squares?

The idea behind Sketch Squares comes from a personal experience. Back in the 1990s, during my train journeys to university, I would capture the passing landscapes by sketching them in small squares. This technique made the daunting task of filling a blank page much easier, and I’ve continued to use it throughout my artistic journey.

In 2020, I employed this technique for my painting, "140 Monochrome Studies of Sussex," which was accepted into the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) 208th Exhibition at London’s Mall Galleries and won the John Purcell Paper Prize. That same year, "Studying Murmurations" won the People’s Choice Award for the Derwent Art Prize. It was an exhilarating time! Additionally, my square studies piece, "Chapters," was selected for the Society of Women Artists and is now available as a limited edition print.

The Birth of Sketch Squares

After sharing my technique on social media, I received numerous inquiries about the template I used. Over time, I had hand-drawn squares, used rulers, and even improvised with bits from children’s toys. Realizing the need for a dedicated tool, I’m thrilled to introduce Sketch Squares to the artistic community.

Who Can Benefit from Sketch Squares?

Sketch Squares is a versatile tool suitable for a wide range of artists:

  • Fine Artists: Simplify your creative process by breaking down your ideas into manageable squares.

  • Students: A great aid for practicing and refining your skills.

  • Comic Makers: Perfect for planning and organizing panels.

  • Casual Creators: Whether you’re doodling or exploring new concepts, Sketch Squares offers a structured yet flexible framework.

Embrace the Ease of Creativity

Sketch Squares is more than just a tool; it’s an invitation to embrace creativity without the intimidation of a blank page. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just having a play, this template will be a valuable addition to your studio.
